La Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, a través de su Facultad de Arquitectura, organiza el Premio a la Composición Arquitectónica Alberto J. Pani. Este es un concurso donde, en un plazo de 4 días, se realiza un proyecto arquitectónico en su totalidad. Para la 37va edición, se planteó el diseño de una capilla ecuménica en el corazón de la ciudad de Cuernavaca, Morelos.

The "Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México," through its Faculty of Architecture, organizes the Alberto J. Pani Architectural Composition Award. This is a contest where, within a period of 4 days, an architectural project is planned out in its entirety. For the 37th edition, the design of an ecumenical chapel in the heart of the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, was proposed.

Michel Foucault, en una de sus conferencias radiofónicas, “El cuerpo utópico,” habla sobre el cuerpo y la relación de este con el alma. Aquí se plantea una diferencia entre lo material y lo inmaterial, el cuerpo físico y la mente. Foucault define esta diferencia como una batalla entre lo terrenal, desgastado y afectado por el tiempo contra el pensamiento, sujeto capaz de sobrepasar los límites de lo temporal y físicamente posible. Esta “implacable utopía” donde nuestro espíritu está encadenado por las riendas de nuestro cascarón, evita un acercamiento honesto a aquello que consideramos sagrado, etéreo y trascendental. A través del reconocimiento de lo físicamente sensible como parteaguas hacia el encuentro con lo sagrado, podríamos encontrar esa relación entre nuestro mundo inmediato y eso que va “más allá.”

In "Le corps utopique," one of Foucault's radio lectures, he talks about the body and its relationship with the soul. He establishes a difference between the material and immaterial, the physical body and the mind. Foucault defines these differences as a battle between the mundane, worn out and affected by time, against thoughts able to go beyond the limits of temporal and physical possibilities. This "relentless utopia," where our spirit is chained by the reins of our body, prevents us from getting near to that which we consider sacred, ethereal, and transcendental. Through the acknowledgement of the physically sensible as a beginning towards the meeting place with everything that's sacred, we could find a certain relation between our immediate world and that which lies beyond.

Una relación íntima entre lo físico y lo espiritual empieza desde el reconocimiento de nuestra mortandad y sencillez frente a la grandeza de lo místico, lo que sale de nuestra esfera del entendimiento. La arquitectura de una capilla ecuménica debería de reflejar la devoción a lo engrandecido mediante una representación arquitectónica, como una ruina que hable del paso del tiempo en nuestras vidas, y como los cambios en ella afectan secuencialmente nuestro sentido de la existencia. Aceptando nuestra forma física como un vehículo que viaja a través del tiempo, empezaremos con la búsqueda de lo que nos une a eso que nos da significado.

An intimate relationship between the physical and the spiritual begins from the recognition of our mortality and simplicity in the face of the mystical, that which roams out of of own understanding. The architecture of an ecumenical chapel should reflect the devotion to the magnified by means of an architectural representation that takes the idea of ruins, its telling of time around our lives, and how the changes from with affect out sense of existence. Accepting our physical form as a vehicle that travels through time, we can begin with the search for that which unites us with that which gives us meaning.

Tomando el paso del tiempo como la experiencia definitiva para el ser humano, eso que a todos nos toca experimentar, y manifestándola en algo que permita acercarse a lo trascendental, podremos conocer nuestra pequeñez. Pero justamente esta humildad es lo que nos inspira a buscar eso que nunca podremos encontrar seguramente, la salvación.

Taking the passage of time as the definitive experience for humans, that which we all have to experience, and manifesting it in something that allows us to approach the transcendental, we could get to understand our smallness. But it is precisely this humility that inspires us to seek that which we can never safely find, salvation.
